Professor at IRIDeS, Tohoku University
Shunichi Koshimura

After completing his doctor's course at the School of Engineering at Tohoku University, worked as a special researcher of the Japan Institute for the Promotion of Science (at the Earthquake Research Institute of Tokyo University), as a guest researcher at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the United States, and as a full-time researcher at the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institute at the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial, before assuming his current position.
Prof. Koshimura develops new frameworks for disaster response and mitigation. His research interests begin from the tsunami simulation and widens into remote sensing and social sensing technology using big data assimilation. He has developed the widely-known tsunami fragility curves as a method to estimate the damage probability of buildings after a tsunami.
Within DIM2SEA, Prof. Koshimura, due to his expertise, is in charge of advising on the whole project and co-developing the damage estimation models to grasp the entire aftermath of a disaster.
